{"id":36480,"date":"2026-04-29T06:11:42","date_gmt":"2026-04-29T06:11:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/indafunds.com\/?p=36480"},"modified":"2026-04-29T06:11:43","modified_gmt":"2026-04-29T06:11:43","slug":"albertsons-sued-over-deceptive-bogo-promotions-by-washington-ag","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/indafunds.com\/?p=36480","title":{"rendered":"Albertsons Sued Over \u2018Deceptive\u2019 BOGO Promotions by Washington AG"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-582324\">\n<p>One of the nation\u2019s largest grocers is under fire for allegedly inflating prices ahead of its \u201cbuy one get one free\u201d promotions, garnering nearly $20 million in the process.<\/p>\n<p>Washington State Attorney General Nick Brown on April 27 announced that his office is suing Albertsons Companies for overcharging customers through what Brown\u2019s office calls \u201cdeceptive\u201d buy-one-get-one-free, or BOGO, promotions.<\/p>\n<p>According to the complaint, Albertsons stores \u2014 which in Washington includes its namesake brand, as well as Safeway and Haggen \u2014 raked in upwards of $19.7 million across 3 million transactions. The price hikes allegedly occurred from October 2019 to May 2024.<\/p>\n<h2>Price Hikes Precede Promotions, AG Alleges<\/h2>\n<p>In the alleged scheme, the complaint states, stores would \u201cartificially hike prices\u201d on everything from bread and cereals to produce and olive oil in the weeks or months preceding a BOGO promotion. They would then lower the prices within 30 days of the promotion\u2019s end, effectively offsetting any potential savings for consumers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not going to stand for people getting fleeced by these deceptive practices,\u201d Brown said in a statement. \u201cThat\u2019s why we\u2019ve filed this case.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The complaint, filed in King County Superior Court, details several examples.<\/p>\n<p>In 2023, an Albertsons in southern Washington raised the price of hoagie rolls by 27%, from $3.39 to $4.29, one day before a BOGO deal was announced. When that promotion ended, the price dipped to $2.49.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, in 2021, a Safeway near the state\u2019s northern border inflated the price of a mini watermelon from $3.99 to $5.99 two days before a BOGO promotion began. When it ended, the watermelon was priced at $3.99 again.<\/p>\n<p>The most drastic example cited in the complaint involved a jar of olives sold at a suburban Albertsons roughly 12 miles outside Seattle. Two days before a BOGO promotion was announced, the store raised the price of the jar by 84%, from $2.99 to $5.49, before pricing it back at $2.99 once the promotion ended.<\/p>\n<p>Brown\u2019s office is requesting that the court determine Albertsons Companies\u2019 conduct violates state law, that the company put an end to its \u201cuse of unfair and deceptive BOGO promotions,\u201d reimburse affected consumers in the state, and pay civil penalties and pre-judgment interest.<\/p>\n<h2>AG\u2019s Claims Based on \u2018Flawed Analysis and Data,\u2019 Albertsons Says<\/h2>\n<p>In a statement shared with USA TODAY, Albertsons Companies said it \u201cstrongly disagrees\u201d with the claims in the complaint, adding they are \u201cbased on flawed analysis and data errors that we identified and raised\u201d with the AG\u2019s office.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlbertsons Companies is committed to complying with the law and to offering customers clear value through our promotions. As this is pending litigation, we will address the matter through the legal process and cannot comment further,\u201d the company said.<\/p>\n<p>As one of the nation\u2019s largest grocers, Albertsons Companies\u2019 portfolio includes more than 2,200 stores operating under more than 20 regional banners across 34 states and Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n<h2>A History of Albertsons Companies\u2019 BOGO Settlements<\/h2>\n<p>While Albertsons Companies denies the allegations, it has settled two class-action lawsuits in the past.<\/p>\n<p>In 2016, Albertsons paid $107 million to settle a BOGO promotion case in nearby Oregon, plus another $107 million to settle a 2023 federal court case concerning BOGO promotions in Washington.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to make sure we\u2019re protecting people\u2019s pocketbooks, and we all know that affordability is a major issue these days,\u201d Brown said. \u201cWe\u2019ve got to push back when companies are misleading their customers.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Read the full article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moneytalksnews.com\/albertsons-sued-over-deceptive-bogo-promotions-by-washington-ag\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" rel=\"nofollow\">here<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of the nation\u2019s largest grocers is under fire for allegedly inflating prices ahead of its \u201cbuy one get one free\u201d promotions, garnering nearly $20 million in the process.
