What Is the Christmas Price Index?<\/h2>\n

The Christmas Price Index is an annual list that looks a lot like the Consumer Price Index. But instead of measuring the price of your grocery bill, the Christmas Price Index looks at the actual price of the \u201cgoods and services\u201d from the Christmas song \u201cThe 12 Days of Christmas.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

Yep. We\u2019re totally serious.\n <\/p>\n

PNC Financial Services has crunched the numbers on \u201cThe 12 Days of Christmas\u201d since 1984, and it\u2019s not stopping now.\n <\/p>\n

How Much Do the Gifts From \u201cThe 12 Days of Christmas\u201d Cost?<\/h2>\n

Here\u2019s how much each gift would set you back this year.\n <\/p>\n

The Christmas Price Index and Inflation<\/h2>\n

No one can escape\u00a0inflation\u00a0these days. Yep, the seven swans a-swimming couldn\u2019t even get away from paying more for groceries and utilities if they did their best Michael Phelps impression.\n <\/p>\n

The same is true for the Christmas Price Index, which is over $4,300 more expensive in 2022 than it was in 2021.2<\/sup> That\u2019s a 10.5% increase, and it\u2019s not too far off from the real inflation rate in the U.S. right now\u2014a whopping 7.1%.3<\/sup>\n <\/p>\n

Some of \u201cThe 12 Days of Christmas\u201d gifts that got hit the hardest by inflation over the last year are the five golden rings (39% more expensive in 2022 than in 2021), the two turtle doves (33%), and the lonely partridge who\u2019s probably tired of eating pears all day (26%).\n <\/p>\n

The Christmas Price Index and Online Shopping<\/h2>\n

Long gone are the days of waiting in line outside of Macy\u2019s in the freezing cold to get doorbuster deals at Christmastime (unless you find that sort of thing fun\u2014in which case, you do you). Now, you can get the same sales from your phone while sitting on the couch under a warm blanket.\n <\/p>\n

But when it comes to the gifts in \u201cThe 12 Days of Christmas,\u201d shopping online will actually cost you\u00a0more<\/em>\u00a0cash to get those gifts into the hands of your true love.4<\/sup> The big price jump is mostly thanks to the shipping and gas prices behind carting around those 23 live birds.\n <\/p>\n

By the way, what the heck would someone even do with all those birds? Open a sanctuary? Set up a real-life version of Angry Birds? There aren\u2019t exactly a ton of options there. Giving a gift card or a pack of socks would probably be a much better choice.\n <\/p>\n
